To pass the cognitive exam, an applicant has to provide effective entry-level emergency medical care and meet the paradigm of competency. The questions asked in the exam cover the entire syllabus, including: A student can expect 70-120 questions, which he/she has to answer in the allotted time of 2 hours. This examination evaluates the candidate’s competence level. In order to gain an EMT certification in New Jersey, the student has to clear the cognitive exam, which is a computer adaptive test (CAT). Every state conducts its own exam, based on the curriculum of the NREMT. This exam is accepted nearly in all the states of the United States of America. The syllabus for this test is designed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). In order to become a successful Emergency Medical Technician, a candidate has to clear the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) examination. If two stations are failed then the participant must schedule and take a 2 Station Retest which only requires retesting those failed stations. If only one station is failed then the candidate must meet with their EMS instructor for retraining, at which time the skill will be signed off and submitted to the State. All five stations must be passed in order to successfully pass the exam. The complete exam consists of a five station exam process. This CT State Practical Exam is administered under the strict direction and oversight of the State of CT Department of Public Health (DPH) Office of Emergency Medical Services (OEMS). This practical exam is one part of a two part CT certification process, with the other part being a cumulative written exam administered by the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians. The CT State EMT Practical Exam is the psychomotor (practical skills) portion of the testing process leading to State of Connecticut certification and NREMT registration as an Emergency Medical Technician. Graduates of State of Connecticut approved Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) programs seeking state certification and/or national registration as an EMT.
