So I did chose exFAT for the USB transfer because of the larger file size and some better reported benchmarks. Linux under Chromebook opens up a world of utilities beyond the scope of this message. It offers to format as USB drive as FAT32, exFAT or NTFS. Both machines running the latest operating systems appropriate for the platform.Ĭhromebook can read Mac filesystem formats, but not write them. I found your article because I was trying to choose between FAT32 and exFAT in formatting a 64GB USB drive for use in transferring data between a ChromeBook and a MacBook. I consider disk access too important. And at least one way to read HFS+ on Windows (for free). One footnote: I am hesitant to mention other ways to write NTFS on OSX for free. That way, you stop thinking about what any drive is formatted and just get your work done. It can read/write the Mac format on a Windows system. If you’re primarily on Mac, format everything HFS+ and buy a utility like Paragon’s Microsoft NTFS for Mac.What should you do instead? It depends on your primary platform. Never use for live access of information. Where should I use ExFat? Predominantly on a removable drive that is used solely to transfer between systems. If they’re not accounted for, and you eject the drive incorrectly, you’ll possibly lose data or corrupt the drive. While reading/writing to a drive, some information is cached – especially some quick small elements. There are many, many of us who professionally switch platforms, sometimes inside of the same day. On paper, it looks great, but no, I don’t think you should use it!Ī good rule of thumb? If you’re on a Mac, use HFS+/Mac OS Extended. It can be read/written by Mac or Windows and doesn’t have the limitation of 4GB like Fat32. ExFat (Extensible File Allocation Table). It’s the most common Mac drive format – and also called MacOS Extended. Readable on both Mac and Windows, but only writeable on Windows. Both methods provide pretty similar answers, but if we change the FOV from 125m/1000m to 140m/1000m we can see that the difference in angle increases. With the segment method, the angle is different, 7.1619°. This means that it doesn't matter which triangle method we use to calculate the angle. With the triangle method, the angle γ in both cases is 7.1666°. We can see that there are some differences between both calculation methods. From an arc length equation, we can calculate γ angle:.To calculate the angle, we need an equation for the arc length:.The law of cosines is used for calculating the angles of a triangle if we know all three sides (as it is in our case).įor calculation, we use the same triangle as we did in the first case, with a peak at the lens and the base at the field of view. If we use the second method, there is no need to divide the triangle. Then we calculate the value of cathetus an (adjacent to angle γ) using the equation below (Pythagorean theorem:Īfter we calculate the length of all three sides of a right triangle then we can use trigonometry to calculate the angle γ. With binoculars, spotting scopes, and other optical devices the field of view is measured at 1000m, so the hypotenuse is also 1000m. With riflescopes, the hypotenuse is set at 100m because the field of view is being measured at 100m. The value of hypotenuse (h) also depends on a field of view value. If you are still not certain what is the size of the angle on your binocular, here are some methods how to calculate it.įirst, we calculate the value of cathetus o (opposed to angle γ). Most manufacturers already state how much is the angle of view on their optical devices. This article will help you if FOV is expressed in meters or yards and you want it to be in degrees. I wrote this article because I wanted to show you how to convert linear FOV to angular FOV and the other way around. If the angle is high this means that the field of view is wide – the higher the angle, the wider the field of view. Besides the linear field of view, there is also an angular field of view where the field of view is provided in angular degrees. Measurements in yards, feet, and meters are called the linear field of view. Field of view can be expressed in multiple measurements. It depends on the build of the eyepiece, thickness of the lenses and it is also affected by magnification. Field of view is the measured area of the scene a person sees when looking through the binoculars. Once you get through the somewhat-clumsy interface, though, you’ll find that this is perhaps the most fully-featured pinball app of all – you can even edit the ambient noise to whatever you find most enjoyable. There’s also a truly staggering range of customisation options, to the point that the game can be a little overwhelming at first. Sadly, there aren’t many people playing any of tables (aside from the free one you get when downloading the game), but the effort that’s gone into encouraging the competitive spirit in Zaccaria Pinball is impressive. Each of those different play styles has its own separate leaderboard, which are updated in real time as you play, so you can actually see yourself moving up through the rankings. Each table has a half dozen different ways to play, and dozens of achievements to unlock (with free extra tables being unlocked as more achievements are earned). This is all a real pity, because the work that has gone into the app itself is nothing short of incredible. Coupled with the garish aesthetics I mentioned previously, it’s really, really difficult to care about any of the tables in Zaccaria’s entire range. These are generic, nondescript titles that hardly do much to excite the imagination. Zaccaria Pinball’s machines? Magic Castle. Licensing has always been important to the appeal of pinball whether you’re a fan of Star Trek, Dr Who, Lord of the Rings, AC/DC or KISS, many of the best and most beloved tables are based on popular culture, films, music, or other instantly recognisable properties. Licensing is another issue for the Zaccaria Pinball line. I could stick a picture of Hatsune Miku over the space-themed table base and it would be as representative of Hatsune Miku as it was of the space theme. While the other, better pinball manufacturers were working really hard to make the actual design and play style of their tables match the themes they were working with, Zaccaria’s tables are very cookie-cutter in approach. Ramps and other decorative elements are always kept to a minimum, and really, for the most part the only part of these tables that carries the theme is the artwork painted on to the base. I find that the Zaccaria tables rely too heavily on bumpers, which are the most unengaging mechanics you can find on a table. That’s the standard of design we’re talking about here. As a kid I had a space-themed cheap tabletop pinball machine that my parents gave me as a Christmas gift, and it’s telling that one of the Zaccaria Pinball space-themed pinball table gave me a rush of nostalgia for that machine. As a result, the simply didn’t play as well. Zaccaria’s tables were frequently aesthetically garish, and lacked the embellishments and slick design of their peers. Zaccaria was an Italian manufacturer that claimed to be the third-ranked pinball manufacturer in the world when pinball was at its peak, but in the context of the world of pinball that means it was very much the B-tier. If that name isn’t familiar to you, there’s probably a good reason. By that I mean that it’s problem is that it gives players exact replicas of Zaccaria pinball tables. Zaccaria Pinball deserves to be a third name in that small group of elite pinball collections, and is certainly built to the same standards as its peers, but its namesake really lets it down. The Pinball Arcade, meanwhile, gave players exact replicas of classic tables from the likes of Gottlieb and Stern. Zen Pinball/ Pinball FX gave players original digital pinball tables, most of which wouldn’t be possible as physical, real-world pinball experiences. Previously, digital pinball fans only had two real choices for deep pinball experiences. Zaccaria Pinball has a fascinating story, in a way that I’m still not sure why it got made at all. I’d like to think it’s something I can do.īut then I played Zaccaria Pinball, and while I wouldn’t say that it has killed my dream, it has reminded me that pinball design is actually incredibly hard to do well, and my grand dream idea may well not work out the way I thought. I’ve got this great idea for a Hatsune Miku-themed one, and while a pinball table is a complex thing to build, people get up to more intricate homemade projects than that. One of my goals, somewhere down the track if I ever find the time to do it, is to design and build my own pinball table. I'm not very satisfied with it, it sounds really generic and doesn't really roll off the tongue when said out loud. But yeah, that being said it does seem more common to just go for a low res look without any specific restrictions or specs in mind. Your game looks cool, really interesting palette and use of Arkanoid/portal mechanics! I think there are a few other promising retro projects people are working on around here, like Soul Compass, and I also remember someone made a full NES styled puzzle game a while back. Here's a link to the game's style guide.įinally, in case you were wondering, the game is being programmed in C++, using SFML as its main multimedia library.Īs of December 2014: the base engine, most of the art in the first half of the game, and work has started on several different levels.Īlso is good to see that i'm not the one doing a a retro game with a limited palette, resolution, etc. The graphical style is inspired by NES games such as Shatterhand and Batman, which utilized heavy dithering and details in negative space to create a dark atmosphere within the system's limitations. There will also be multiple difficulty modes, ranging from Expert to Novice (arcade/early-console hard down to your Grandma can beat it). The ultimate goal is to clear it in one credit (life), and the total length will probably be around ~25-30 minutes on a good playthrough however, getting to that good playthrough might take hours. The game is aiming to be "arcade-style" that is, tight length, tight design, and high difficulty. Its aesthetic is essentially: "what if the NES didn't have any memory or sprite limitations?" The game mainly focuses on close combat, but the player is also equipped with a variety of different weapons.
